The Europa Cup and Euro Masters series in Lugano was held the last weekend in March this year. The total number of sailors was 98, with about 30 boats in each class. The conditions proved to be different compared to last year’s very light winds. The first day had a strong shifting wind with gusts up to 35 knots and after some hesitation it was finally decided not to race. I think this was a relief to most of us, good racing would have been extremely difficult and we preferred watching the bathing exercise of the few courageous ones who gave it a try.
The second day, in sunny and spring like weather, a southerly thermic wind built up in the afternoon, allowing three races to be sailed in stable conditions and a moderate breeze. The racing was very even in the standard fleet and the first five boats were within only a few points after the first day’s racing. I personally managed to sail all three races very well and without any big mistakes. With relatively clean starts I could stick to my tactics to mostly stay on the right hand side of the beat, close to the cliffs, however benefiting from occasional left hand shifts especially close to the windward mark further south in the lake.
During the third day, again in wonderful spring weather, a similar thermic breeze finally kicked in and two more races could be sailed. The wind was light and shifted more compared to the day before and both upwind and downwind strategy was less evident. I decided to play relatively safe staying in the middle of the course, both upwind and downwind, carefully trying to match gusts and shifts when spotted. This worked nicely for me and I managed to sail two additional good races and which eventually allowed me to finish first overall. Not a bad start for the season and it seems our long winter trainings in Morges paid off after all.
So to summarize, sun, wind, excellent sailing, good organisation, good pasta after the races and a great atmosphere. Make sure you don´t miss the next regatta in Lugano.
